I need to upgrade to Windows 10, will that cause inFlow On-Premise to stop working?

This article applies for all Windows upgrades (not necessarily just Windows 10). For example, if you’re upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

Note that Windows updates are completely different from upgrades, and should not affect inFlow negatively unless it’s a big security update from Microsoft (very rare).

To be safe, before doing the Windows upgrade, you should back up and uninstall inFlow, then go ahead with the Windows upgrade. Once done, you can reinstall inFlow and restore your data safely. These steps are only necessary on the “inFlow server computer”, or if you’re running inFlow as a standalone. Client / secondary computers do not need to reinstall.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Go to the Main Menu > General > Back up Data. This will create a backup file you can save to a USB drive or a cloud service (like Dropbox or Google Drive).
  2. Go to Main Menu > Options > About inFlow. You will see an email address and inFlow version number in this screen.
  3. The email address listed is your inFlow web account. This account contains your licenses and you’ll need to know this in order to reapply the license to the program after reinstalling. If you don’t know the password to log in to your inFlow webaccount , you can reset it.
  4. Note down the inFlow version number (inFlow v3.4.1, for example), so you can obtain the correct version to install.
  5. Go to your Windows Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a program and uninstall inFlow.
  6. When finished, proceed with the Windows upgrade.

After the Windows upgrade:

  1. Follow this link to get the version of inFlow you would like to install (found in step 4 above).
  2. Run the installer, and click Customize my installation > Server and Client > choose your preferred SQL Server version, or just let it use the default LocalDB 2014 version.
  3. Let it install. When it’s done, go to Main Menu > General > Restore Data, then restore from your backup file.
  4. Lastly, go to Main Menu > Options > About inFlow and click Log in.
  5. Log in to your inFlow webaccount, and you’re done!

Problems installing? Or did the upgrade already happen and inFlow won’t work now? Try a full cleanup before reinstalling.
